UPDATE AFTER MY TRIP
THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE RECOGNIZING BAP AS A LEADING AFRICAN DIRECTOR FOR ITS AFS FILM & TV LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE IS A SIGNIFICANT ACCOLADE, UNDERSCORING BAP’S INFLUENCE AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY.
This initiative, running from October 9-23, 2024, connects top filmmakers across multiple U.S. cities, aiming to foster cultural exchange and collaboration among industry leaders. BAP’s selection highlights their contributions to African cinema and their potential to influence global storytelling and film production practices.
Throughout the initiative, I had the privilege of sharing the journeys behind my films, House of GA’A and Funmilayo. These works have achieved landmark success: House of GA’A earned a place on Netflix’s Global Top 10 for indigenous language films, while Funmilayo became the highest-grossing biopic in West African cinema history. Presenting these stories to an international audience highlighted the importance of preserving cultural identity in storytelling while engaging viewers worldwide.
This program’s dynamic workshops and sessions allowed me to collaborate with other visionary directors and producers. We explored strategies to elevate African narratives in mainstream media and celebrated our diversity while amplifying the continent’s voices on a global scale. Additionally, I brought my experiences as a lawyer, filmmaker, and educator, including my work at Terra Academy for the Arts, where over 24,000 individuals have trained in the creative arts. It was rewarding to see how my insights on arts education and cultural preservation resonated with colleagues aiming for similar transformative impact through their works.
In summary, the AFS Film & TV Leadership Initiative Program was an unforgettable milestone. I return home enriched with ideas, collaborations, and a renewed commitment to telling African stories that bridge cultural divides, inspire audiences, and shape the future of global cinema.
